A brief history of these friendly blue characters.
The Smurfs is a comic book series created by the Belgian artist Peyo in 1958. In French, they are called ‘Les Schtroumpfs’ and in English, ‘The Smurfs’. The protagonists are small blue creatures who live in a village of mushroom houses in the middle of the forest called ‘Smurf Village’. Since the author Peyo passed away on December 24, 1992, his son Thierry Culliford has been in charge of publishing new Smurf comic albums. Enjoy this selection of Smurfs printables and have fun!

Below, we share some fun facts about The Smurfs that you might not have known:
Origin and name:
The name ‘Smurf’ arose from a misunderstanding. Peyo, the series’ creator, couldn’t remember the French word for ‘salt’ and replaced it with ‘schtroumpf’ during a meal with a friend.
Smurf Village:
The Smurf Village is inspired by the Houffalize forest in Belgium, where Peyo used to spend his vacations. Smurf houses are mushrooms of various sizes and shapes. The village organization resembles a commune, with everyone working together for the common good.
What Smurfs are like:
All male Smurfs are blue and are the same height. They are distinguished by their hats, which they always wear. Smurfette was the only female Smurf until the arrival of other female Smurfs in the animated series. Each Smurf has a unique personality and trade: Papa Smurf is the leader, Grouchy Smurf is always complaining, Fearful Smurf is timid, etc. The Smurfs speak their own language, similar to French, but with the word ‘smurf’ inserted into many sentences.
The enemy:
The enemy: The Smurfs’ arch-nemesis is the evil sorcerer Gargamel, who is obsessed with catching them to turn them into the Philosopher’s Stone. Gargamel is always accompanied by his cat, Azrael, who also fails to catch the Smurfs. Gargamel is one of the Smurfs coloring pages we have available for you.
World Smurfs Day:
Every year, World Smurfs Day is celebrated on the Saturday closest to June 25th (the birthday of their creator, Peyo). This event celebrates ‘Smurfiness’ all around the planet, honoring our beloved little blue friends, the joy they spread, and the values they represent: respect, tolerance, teamwork, and fun. It also highlights caring for nature and one another, as well as believing in the future.

Other facts:
There are more than 100 different Smurfs in the Smurf universe. Since these cartoon series characters were created, comic books, television series, movies, video games, and a wide variety of Smurf merchandise have been produced.
Alongside Tintin, The Smurfs are one of the most popular Belgian creations worldwide and have been translated into many languages.
The movie ‘The Smurfs’ was released in 2011
In 2017 and 2028, the film ‘Smurfs: The Lost Village’ was released, a movie based on the original comic book series.

The Smurfs characters
The Smurfs are a true collection of characters; these are the main ones:
Smurfette: Her original French name is Schtroumpfette, and she is the only female Smurf. She first appeared in the 1966 comic book of the same name, and in the 1981 animated series, she became one of the main characters.
Papa Smurf: He is the leader of the Smurfs. He is the only one who wears a red hat and pants, and he also sports a distinctive long white beard. Everyone trusts him and always seeks his advice and help when things go wrong. He possesses great wisdom and always protects everyone from dangerous situations with his knowledge of magic, which allows him to create special elixirs and spells.
Handy Smurf: He is one of the most frequent characters in the Smurfs series and comic books. His original French name is Schtroumpf Bricoleur, and in Latin America, he is known as Pitufo Genio. He is very ingenious, clever, and creative, always designing new inventions and engineering gadgets. Many times, his inventions have been crucial in saving his fellow Smurfs and the village where they live.
Brainy Smurf: He is always reading and wears glasses. He is very serious and is the only one who takes everything with great responsibility. He is the most intellectual and is constantly giving advice to others and telling them what to do, often using old proverbs. He always listens to Papa Smurf and frequently tells on the others when they do something wrong. Although they are all his friends and appreciate him, they sometimes hit him on the head with a hammer when they’ve had enough of him.
Gargamel: He is the main villain of the series. Originally an alchemist, he later became a Smurf hunter. His first appearance takes place in ‘The Smurf Thief’ (in 1959).”
Gargamel is a monk expelled from his order due to his practice of black magic and his intent to grow rich through alchemy. He lives, along with his cat Azrael, in a small abandoned hermitage in the middle of the forest where the Smurfs live. His obsession is to capture the Smurfs by any means necessary. Initially, it was to obtain the Philosopher’s Stone, but later, it was simply because he hates these friendly blue characters.
The sorcerer Gargamel is the creator of Smurfette, a female created to destabilize the Smurf Village, but who eventually becomes their friend. Gargamel cannot enter the village unless he is accompanied by one of the blue characters.
Grouchy Smurf: He is always complaining and is never satisfied. He always responds that he doesn’t like it, that he doesn’t want to, or with overall negativity. He is the discordant note in Smurf Village, where everyone else is always happy and enjoying celebrations.
Depending on your personality, you’re sure to find a Smurf that matches it. Take a close look at all the Smurf drawings for free download that we’ve selected for you, and think of them as a friend for life.
