It’s time to start your Jurassic adventure!

Learn about the different types of dinosaurs that existed through these full-color illustrations.

Take a look at these incredible illustrations that recreate what these prehistoric animals, who inhabited the face of the Earth millions of years ago, looked like. Some are quite scary! There were many different species, each with unique characteristics, different diets, walking styles, and more. They are actually scientific dinosaur illustrations, drawn with great detail, allowing us to see a very close approximation of what these Jurassic animals were truly like. Below each image, you will find information about that specific type of dinosaur.

Dinosaur of the species Compsognathus

The species known as Compsognathus Longipes is the only known species of compsognathid theropod dinosaurs. This spectacular species lived in what is now Europe (obviously, so long ago, Europe did not exist; in fact, humans didn’t even exist yet) during the Tithonian stage, approximately 150 million years ago, at the end of the Jurassic period. They were small, bipedal animals—meaning they walked on 2 hind legs, which were very long in this case—and they also had a very long tail used to maintain balance when walking. Prepare to be amazed!

Dinosaur of the species Suchomimus

The Suchomimus species were theropods and spinosaurids. Theropods were saurischian  dinosaurs with hollow bones and three toes on their limbs that they could move to help themselves eat, among other things. Spinosaurids were large bipedal predators (they walked on 2 legs) with highly elongated skulls, similar to crocodiles. They had conical teeth and lived during the mid-Cretaceous period, about 125 to 112 million years ago, in the Aptian age.  They lived in the area of the Earth that is now Africa. The birds that inhabit the Earth today are direct descendants of saurischians.

We wouldn’t have such a clear image today of what dinosaurs looked like without the help of many artists who, throughout history, have recreated these animals. These artists have combined their creative talent and imagination with the data provided by scientists and paleontologists, giving us beautiful illustrations where we can see what the prehistoric era was truly like.

Also, thanks to these artists, we can enjoy funnier types of illustrations that have turned dinosaurs into a true icon of popular culture.
