To design characters that make an impact and grab our attention, the following process is necessary:
1. Train your observation, both of the real world and of characters previously created by other designers: Observe and learn how to properly document yourself before beginning the process of creating characters.
2. Define the character’s personality: Establish your character’s personality and what kinds of stories they can tell. What do they think? What life experiences have they had? What environment did they grow up and form in? What are their tastes?
3. Course of action: Determine the most interesting angle to illustrate your characters. Enhance what is most characteristic of the character or what helps you best tell the story or focus on something.
4. Silhouette or shape: Create a basic outline of how the character will look. Do this in the fundamental positions: front, profile, back, and a slightly turned or 3/4 view of the character. Use guides and templates to ensure the character’s measurements and proportions are consistent across all views.
5. Gestures: Apply body language and gestures to your character. The more unique they are, the more personality your character will have; over-caricaturing can make our characters too histrionic, but a little is fine for them to have more drawing power. Normally, in many animation productions, characters have their movements highly enhanced to make them more attractive.
6. Anatomy: Understanding the structure and anatomized construction of your character will allow us to visualize them in a more natural way and enable us to connect with them much better.
7. Style: We must establish a character style that matches the story we want to tell and the environment in which it will unfold. We will be defining our character’s commitment to the production we are going to make.
Character design is an increasingly in-demand profession worldwide; in English, it is called Character Design.
