Virgil van Dijk was born on July 8, 1991, in Breda, the Netherlands. Although he's world-famous today, his beginnings were humble: he combined his training at the Willem II academy with a job as a dishwasher. Proof that hard work goes a long way!
His professional career took off at Groningen in the Netherlands, before moving to Celtic in Scotland, where he began to win titles and demonstrate his quality. From there, he moved to Southampton in the Premier League, where his stellar performance caught the attention of the biggest clubs.
In 2018, Virgil van Dijk signed for Liverpool FC in a move that made him one of the most expensive defenders in history, and boy was it worth it! Since his arrival, he has transformed the Reds' defense and has become a key player in the team's impressive achievements.
He made his debut with his country's national team, the famous 'Oranje' (Netherlands), in 2015 and has been the captain since 2018, guiding his team with his leadership.
Why is he so good? At an impressive 1.95 meters tall, Van Dijk is dominant in the air, winning almost every ball in the air. But he's not just strong; he's very quick for his size and has masterful tactical positioning, allowing him to anticipate strikers. He's also excellent with the ball at his feet, initiating play from deep. He's a modern, well-rounded center back!
