Manchester City football club was founded on 23 November 1880 under the name St. Mark's (West Gorton), then renamed Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887, and finally, on 16 April 1894, acquired its current name. The club has played its matches at the Etihad Stadium since 2003, having played at Maine Road since 1923. The club adopted its sky-blue shirt in 1894 in the first season of the current version of the club, and it has been used ever since. Manchester City is the fourth most successful club in English football in terms of trophies won.
After regaining their place in the Premier League in 2002, on 1 September 2008 the Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment, an investment group from the United Arab Emirates with Mansour bin Zayed Al-Nahyan as its majority shareholder, took control of the club, replacing former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who had been the club's owner until then.
Since the arrival of the new owners, the club has obtained a total of 17 official titles, including eight Premier League titles (2012, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024), in addition to playing in a UEFA Champions League final for the first time in 2021, where they would lose 1-0 to Chelsea FC. They played their second UEFA Champions League final, in 2023, where they defeated Inter Milan 1-0, thus achieving their first title in the competition and their second international title after 53 years.
