Stitch, also known as ‘Experiment 626’ (pronounced ‘six-two-six’), is a fictional character from Disney’s Lilo & Stitch franchise. This lovable monster is a genetically engineered extraterrestrial lifeform and is the most prominent of the franchise’s two main protagonists; the other being his adopter and best friend, the Hawaiian girl Lilo Pelekai. Over the years, Stitch has established a massive presence in Disney merchandising and is now one of Disney’s most popular modern characters.

Stitch was created by Chris Sanders, the co-writer and co-director of Lilo & Stitch, who also provides his voice in almost all media in which he appears, primarily in Western productions. Ben Diskin voices the character in the English versions of the Asian spin-off television series Stitch! and Stitch & Ai.

Sanders originally created the character in 1981 for a children’s book pitch that never materialized, developing a treatment for an animated film starring him. The character idea remained shelved until around 1996, when the then-president of Walt Disney Animation, Thomas Schumacher, approached Sanders and asked if he wanted to pitch a story, giving him the chance to use his character again. When Sanders mentioned that the alien character would crash into a forest filled with other animals, Schumacher told him the animal world was already ‘too strange’ for humans and suggested that the character should end up in the human world to provide a better contrast and juxtaposition for the story. Sanders felt that Stitch was a masculine character who required a female counterpart in the form of a young girl to balance his bad behavior and create conflict in the story.

Stitch’s character features

Character Design:
Stitch is a small, blue-furred, genetically engineered extraterrestrial lifeform with a koala-like appearance. He has large, bulging eyes, long, jagged ears, sharp teeth, a pair of retractable antennae, sharp claws, and two pairs of arms (the lower set being retractable).

Sanders’ initial design concepts for Stitch differed considerably from the final version. His eyes were slightly smaller, his ears flared at the base, and in some drawings, his nose was placed below the eye line rather than above it. Originally, Stitch was supposed to have green fur. This was changed to blue during the development of the animated film because the head of the Ink and Paint department considered it a more believable color for a dog. Although Stitch is physically similar to a French Bulldog or a koala, Sanders mentioned that he was actually thinking of a bat.  

Stitch’s Personality:
Stitch was created by Jumba Jookiba to spread chaos across the galaxy. He is characterized by his mischievous behavior, which earned him the affection of Lilo, who adopts him as her ‘dog.’ Thanks to Lilo’s belief in the Hawaiian concept of ʻohana—which means ‘family’—Stitch evolves from an indifferent and destructive creature into a loving, more self-aware being who enjoys the company of his adoptive family on Earth. He becomes a firm believer in the concept of ʻohana and, with Lilo’s help, applies it to reform Jumba’s previous 625 experiments, almost all of whom Stitch treats as his ‘cousins.’

Stitch’s Powers and Abilities:
Stitch possesses immense strength, durability, and intelligence; Jumba claims he can think faster than a supercomputer. His eyes can capture various forms of light and filter them as needed. Stitch can see in normal vision (in this mode, his eyes appear solid black), night vision (green), thermal vision (red), and X-ray vision (green). However, his high light sensitivity also makes camera flashes very painful for him.

Much like his ‘cousins,’ the pads on Stitch’s hands and feet can secrete a sticky substance that allows him to adhere to almost any surface and climb buildings and walls; furthermore, his skeletal system is highly flexible, allowing him to roll into a ball and squeeze through tight spaces.

Stitch can also conduct sound, acting as an audio amplifier, a radio, or a microphone. He has an acute sense of smell and hearing (though the latter can lead to temporary deafness when exposed to sonic blasts) and is also highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat, using either all four arms or just two.

Stitch cannot float or swim due to his dense molecular structure, which causes him to sink in water. Originally, Stitch also had an instinctive aquaphobia, but he was able to overcome it with Lilo’s help. Since Stitch’s molecules were not fully charged when he was created—as shown in Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch—if his initial charge was not completed, he suffered seizure-like glitches that reverted him to his original destructive programming before dying. This issue was resolved at the end of the film, and he no longer suffers from these glitches.

Stitch also possesses different abilities in the Asian spin-offs Stitch! and Stitch & Ai, which had not been previously revealed in Western continuity. In Stitch! ~Best Friends Forever~, the anime’s third season, he possesses a hidden power cell that charges his powers to superior levels. In Stitch & Ai, he has new abilities that also change his appearance, including retractable quills around his neck, an extendable patagium that allows him to glide, and a ‘metamorphosis program’ that triggers when his destructive programming is fully activated. The metamorphosis program causes Stitch to grow into a giant with laser tentacles on his back, although this ability contradicts Lilo & Stitch: The Series, which states he is only designed to function efficiently at his usual small size, as he was shown to be clumsier as a giant in The Series.
