The history of Ninja Turtles
The Ninja Turtles, also known as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in English, are a group of fictional characters who became a cultural phenomenon in the 1980s.
The Ninja Turtles were created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Kevin Eastman drew a sketch of a turtle with ninja weapons in hand as something of a joke, and Peter Laird suggested it might be interesting if they were teenage mutants. From this idea, they developed a more comprehensive concept that combined elements of the pop culture of the time, such as martial arts, comic books, and action movies.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles first appeared in a self-published black-and-white comic titled "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" #1, published in May 1984 by Mirage Studios, a comic book company founded by Eastman and Laird. The comic had a darker, more adult tone compared to the more child-oriented version that later caught on.
The unexpected success of the comic series led to the creation of a larger franchise. In 1987, an animated television series was released that changed the tone towards something more suitable for children, catapulting the popularity of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles worldwide. The names of the turtles (Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael) were taken from the names of famous Renaissance artists.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles also became a toy and merchandise sensation, and in 1990 the first live-action film was released, further increasing their fame. Over the years, they have had various incarnations in comics, television series, movies, and other media.
In short, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1984 as an independent comic parody that became a cultural phenomenon, spawning a successful franchise that has left an indelible mark on pop culture.
