A story of courage, friendship, and second chances

I. The Boy Who Always Arrived First

At the foot of Mount Aokiba, right where the outermost houses seemed to ask for permission before venturing near the forest, lay Hoshimori – a small Japanese village of dark roofs, persimmon orchards, and paper lanterns. A narrow, crystal-clear river ran through it, and on clear mornings, the shrine bell announcing the break of day could be heard from every street.
Kiro lived with his grandmother in the old rangers house. He was fourteen years old, with perpetually messy black hair and a habit of wearing an oversized red jacket that had once belonged to his father. Everyone in Hoshimori knew him. He was the first to climb a roof to rescue a stuck kite, the first to step up when a storm knocked down a fence, and, more often than not, the first to leap into trouble no one had asked him to solve.
His grandmother used to tell him: You have a big heart, Kiro. But even a big heart must learn to listen before taking action.
Kiro would smile, promise to remember, and dash right back out toward the next person who might need a helping hand.
One late summer afternoon, while gathering medicinal herbs along the cedar path, he found something peculiar: small muddy footprints that looked human, yet ended in the rounded print of paw-shaped boots. The tracks veered off the main trail, heading into a dense patch of forest that the villagers had avoided for years.
Kiro followed them.
The air grew chillier among the trees. The cicadas had gone silent. Huddled beneath the massive roots of a giant cedar, he discovered a boy – soaked, scratched, and shivering. He looked to be about his age. The boy wore a hooded green cloak and leather boots reinforced in a way that left those curious tracks. Clutched tightly against his chest was a wooden pendant carved in the shape of a leaf.
As Kiro stepped closer, the stranger raised a small pocketknife. Do not take another step.
His hand was shaking so violently that the threat fell flat.
Kiro set his herb basket on the ground and raised his hands. Alright. I will stay right here. But you are cold, and I have food. We can start with that.
The stranger studied him in silence. Finally, he lowered the knife.
His name was Ren, though his family had nicknamed him Paws ever since he was little because of those boots, custom-made to walk over slippery mud without losing footing. He belonged to a wandering guild of artisans and herbalists who traveled between regional villages. The previous night, a sudden, dense fog had blanketed the woods. Something colossal had roared up in the mountains, scattering the wildlife and causing the wooden bridge across the ravine to collapse. In the chaos, Paws had been separated from his parents and his little sister, Nami.
I searched for them until the rain stopped, he explained, looking down in shame. After that, I completely lost my way.
Kiro stood up instantly. Then we are going to find them.
We?
I know these trails like the back of my hand.
Paws peered at the gathering shadows between the cedars. This forest does not look like any place Ive ever seen before.
For the first time, Kiro noticed the eerie silence. No birds, no insects, not even the familiar babble of the creek. Only a low, distant sound, like a deep breath echoing beneath the earth.

II. The Path of Lost Voices

They returned to Hoshimori before nightfall. Kiros grandmother tended to Pawss scratches and examined his pendant. Carved on the back was an ancient symbol: three waves beneath a single leaf.
It is the mark of Lake Mikazuki, she said softly. Long ago, travelers left offerings there to seek protection from the mountains guardian.
Kiro had heard the legends. They spoke of a dragon named Arashi who slept beneath Mount Aokiba, maintaining the balance of the forest waters. When he was at peace, the springs flowed pure and clear. When he suffered, the storms lost their way.
Those are just stories to scare children, Kiro claimed, though the memory of the silent forest drained the confidence from his words.
His grandmother handed him an old compass. Its needle did not point north, but rather toward the nearest running water.
Pawss parents know herbs and paths. If they sought shelter, they would have followed the water. But listen to me carefully: something has disturbed the forest. Do not fight what you do not understand.
The next morning, Kiro and Paws set off equipped with supplies, rope, bandages, and a small brass bell from the shrine. Their search quickly highlighted their differences. Kiro forged ahead at a fast pace, pushing branches aside and choosing the shortest route. Paws stopped constantly to inspect snapped stems, shifted stones, and nearly invisible marks on the moss.
If we keep stopping, well never catch up to them! Kiro protested.
And if we run without looking, well pass right by them without knowing it.
Moments later, Paws spotted a thread of blue wool caught on a thorn. It belonged to his mothers shawl. Further along, he discovered three pebbles arranged in the shape of an arrow – a sign his family used while traveling. The clues led them toward a deep gorge shrouded in a fog so thick that the trail vanished just two steps ahead.
From within the mist, voices began to echo.
Kiro heard a young child calling for help and bolted toward the sound. Paws grabbed him by his jacket just before his foot stepped off the cliffs edge. From the other side of the precipice, the voice kept calling out to him with an impossibly sweet tone.
It is not a person, Paws whispered. The fog repeats whatever we expect to hear.
They tied a rope between their waists. Paws tapped the ground with a sturdy branch to test for solid footing, while Kiro rang the shrine bell so that its genuine chime could guide them above the deceptive voices. Together, they crossed the gorge: one watching the ground, the other keeping the course.
Once clear of the fog, Kiro looked down. Thank you for stopping me.
Paws shrugged lightly. Thank you for holding onto the rope.
It was the first time they smiled at each other as true friends.

<img decoding="async" width="1200" height="675" alt="History with illustrations in manga-style. The Reflectionless Lake

For two days, they followed the familys trail. Along the way, they freed a crane trapped in brambles, shared their food with an elderly charcoal burner stranded by a rockslide, and repaired a broken bamboo sluice gate that had diverted water away from a tree nursery. Each deed seemed small on its own, but together, they left that patch of forest better than they found it.
On the third afternoon, they reached Lake Mikazuki.
It was immense and shaped like a crescent moon, but its surface was pitch-black and opaque. It reflected neither the clouds nor the surrounding trees. Dozens of fish gasped for air near the shoreline, and the reeds were coated in a layer of gray dust.
On a nearby island stood an abandoned pavilion. A flash signaled from its balcony: three quick reflections, followed by two. It was the travelers distress signal.
It is them! Paws shouted.
They found a broken boat and repaired it using rope, pine resin, and a piece woven from Kiros basket. The current pulled them toward the center, where dark whirlpools slapped against the hull. Kiro tried to row harder against the current, but Paws pointed to the leaves floating on the waters surface.
Do not fight the water. Look at where it wants to take us.
Matching their strokes, they used the momentum of the whirlpools to glide safely toward the island.
Paws leaped onto the shore before the boat even touched the dock. His mother threw her arms around him so tightly they both collapsed to their knees. His fathers leg was bandaged, but he was out of danger; and seven-year-old Nami, with her uneven pigtails, refused to let go of her brother for a long time.
The joy of their reunion was short-lived. From the pavilion, they had a clear view of the mountains northern slope, where an abandoned quarry had collapsed during the storm. Boulders, mud, and timber debris had choked the channel feeding the lake.
Pawss father explained that they had tried to clear the channel themselves. It was not a natural landslide. Someone excavated too close to the spring and left rotten support beams behind. Water is backing up inside the mountain. If the pressure breaks the slope, a flash flood will surge straight down onto Hoshimori.
Just then, a deep roar shook the entire valley.
The lake split down the middle, and a colossal figure rose from the depths. Arashi, the dragon of ancient tales, unfurled a pair of tattered wings. His scales, which might once have been brilliant blue, were laced with dark, black veins. Embedded around his neck were jagged shards of iron chains and beams dragged down from the quarry. From his jaws came no fire, but a howling gale heavy with rain and ash.
Kiro felt true fear – not the swift rush of adrenaline before a leap, but a deep, heavy dread that convinced his body there was nowhere safe left to run.
Arashi let out a pained roar and took flight, heading directly toward the village.

IV. The Storm Over Hoshimori

The group rushed back along the river, riding the swollen current. By the time Hoshimori came into view, the sky had turned a sickly dark green. Arashi was circling low over the roofs, tearing tiles away with the sweep of his wings. Villagers were fleeing toward the shrine as water began to overflow the drainage canals.
Kiro helped evacuate the houses closest to the riverbank. Paws, his family, and the locals raised makeshift barriers using sacks of rice and wooden planks. But with every flash of lightning, the dark veins pulsing across the dragons skin burned brighter.
We have to bring it down! shouted a local hunter, drawing his bow.
Kiro drew the old ranger machete from his pack. It was what everyone expected of him: charge first, strike first, save everyone.
Then he remembered his grandmothers words, and he truly looked.
Arashi was not setting fire to the homes. He was pounding the earth near the clogged canals. He was not hunting down the villagers; he was trying to push them out of the floods path. And every time his wings beat against the air, the iron shrapnel embedded in his neck dug deeper into his flesh.
He is not attacking the village, Kiro realized. He is trying to clear a path for the water.
The dragon was not the storm. He was its victim.
Kiro lowered his blade. If we kill him, the water stays trapped inside the mountain. We have to open the spillway and break those chains off him.
The plan seemed impossible, but Paws saw an opportunity. The old flood canal ran through the bamboo forest and emptied into abandoned rice paddies where the floodwaters could spread safely without reaching the homes. To open it, three manual sluice gates across the valley had to be opened. The first was near the shrine; the second, under the collapsed bridge; the third, right at the foot of the quarry.
They split up. The villagers opened the first gate. Pawss family rushed to the second. Kiro and Paws ran toward the third just as Arashi descended behind them amidst crackling lightning.
At the quarry, the gate mechanism was pinned beneath a fallen beam. Kiro tried to lift it with brute force, but it would not budge. Paws scanned the terrain and wedged stones beneath the wood to build a lever. Working together, they managed to pry it up just enough. The gate wheel emerged, caked in rust.
It will not turn! Kiro yelled.
It only needs to turn once, Paws replied. We just need it to be the right time.
They lashed their rope around the wheel. Arashi crashed down in front of them, unleashing a blast of wind that snapped the surrounding bamboo like dry grass. Kiro sprinted toward the dragon – not to attack, but to draw its gaze. Dodging a massive claw, he scrambled up a dangling chain and reached the creatures back. There, he spotted the largest iron spike wedged deep at the base of the dragons wing.
Paws understood immediately. He hooked the other end of the rope around the spike while Kiro sliced through the tangled roots and straps holding it fast.
Now! Kiro shouted.
Paws leaped off the stone platform, using his full body weight as a counterweight. The iron spike flew free. Arashi bellowed, but this time the sound carried no rage – only the relief of pain breaking away.
The dragon spread his healed wing wide. The powerful gust of wind spun the rusty wheel. The third sluice gate slammed open.
Across the valley, three shrine bells chimed almost simultaneously.
Water surged through the old canal, rushing through the bamboo forest like a newly born river. It spilled into the empty rice paddies, filling terrace after terrace until its destructive power gently dissipated. At the lake, the water level began to drop. The dark veins on Arashis scales cracked and washed away beneath the rain.
Yet one final chain remained wrapped around his throat.
Kiro approached slowly. The dragon watched him with a single, massive, golden eye – exhausted and calm. The boy set his machete on the ground to show he meant no harm.
I do not know if you can understand me, Kiro said softly, but we do not want to hurt you anymore.
Paws stepped up beside him. Let us help you.
Arashi lowered his majestic head.
Together, the two boys unhooked the final iron link.

V. What Remains After the Storm

By dawn, Hoshimori was still standing.
There were roofs to mend, muddy roads to clear, and flooded fields to drain, but not a single life had been lost. For weeks, the villagers worked side by side with Pawss family to rebuild the bridge, secure the quarry slope, and clean the lake. Because water had returned to the long-abandoned rice paddies, several families decided to cultivate them once more.
Arashi vanished into the high peaks. Some swore they saw a grand blue shadow soaring through the clouds; others said that on stormy nights, the dragon flew over the mountain springs to keep them safe. Kiro did not know which version was true. Hearing the frogs sing once more along the lakes edge was enough for him.
On the eve of the travelers departure, Paws found Kiro mending the fence outside the charcoal burners cottage.
My family decided to stay until the next moon, Paws said. There is still plenty of work to be done.
Kiro tried to hide his grin. Then you are going to need someone to show you the trails.
And you are going to need someone to teach you how to read footprints.
From the wood of the old sluice gates broken beam, they carved two small wooden charms: a leaf crossed by three waves. They promised to carry them always – as a reminder that strength without attention can become its own form of blindness, and that no one ever truly finds their way alone.
In the years that followed, Kiro and Paws ventured far beyond Mount Aokiba: to villages where clocks stood still at sunset, islands that appeared only once every decade, and cities where shadows seemed to whisper ancient secrets. They did not search for monsters to slay or glory to win. They searched for the things others had stopped listening to.
On every journey, Kiro remained the first to step forward. Paws remained the one to catch the subtle clue everyone else had overlooked. And whenever one moved too fast or the other hesitated too long, the small wooden charm reminded them of the promise forged beside the reflectionless lake.
And so began the adventures of Kiro and Paws: not as the tale of two invincible heroes, but as the story of two boys who learned that true courage lies in drawing near to pain without instantly turning it into an enemy.
And in Hoshimori, whenever the shrine bell rang beneath the falling rain, the children would look up toward the mountain. For they knew that somewhere beyond the tall cedars, two friends were still walking wherever someone needed help.

<img decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" alt="History with illustrations in manga-style.
